State Labor Member for Prahran, Tony Lupton, has said the Keeping Melbourne Moving package will benefit thousands of commuters by getting them to where they are going more quickly.
“Standardising clearways will cut travel times for some 300,000 tram and bus passengers and 250,000 private vehicle users every day” Mr Lupton said.
“With more than 80% of public transport services road-based, the plan aims to move trams and buses as quickly as possible by easing pressure on inner-city bottlenecks.”
“This package is about getting people to and from work and school more quickly, saving them precious time and money,” Mr Lupton said.
Since the announcement of the Keeping Melbourne Moving plan Mr Lupton has met with a number of local traders including representatives of the Stonnington Traders Group.
“I have listened to the views of local traders and the Minister has appointed a representative chosen by traders to represent them on an implementation panel” Mr Lupton said.
Mr Lupton has also welcomed the formation of the Independent Partners Against Congested Transport (IMPACT), a new alliance aimed at reducing congestion on our roads.
Mr Lupton said the founding members of IMPACT are Yarra Trams, Public Transport Users Association (PTUA), RACV, Bus Association Victoria, Victorian Taxi Association, Bicycle Victoria and Victorian Transport Association.
“The members of IMPACT have come together because they recognise that Keeping Melbourne Moving is a responsible and timely package that will deliver long term benefits Melbourne wide.
Mr Lupton said congestion would continue to cost Melburnians millions of dollars a year in lost time and increased transport costs if we don’t act now.
“Reducing congestion will have a strong positive impact on our community. With improved traffic flows on major arterial roads, residents will see a decrease in traffic in our residential streets as drivers find they no longer need to seek alternative routes,” Mr Lupton said.
