Works are all set for the upgrade of Windsor and Prahran Stations, improving the stations while respecting their heritage status.
Member for Prahran, Tony Lupton MP, said that the Metropolitan Station Upgrade program, which is funded by the Victorian Transport Plan, would allow these stations to be greatly improved.
“We’re seeing a record number of passenger trips on Melbourne’s rail network,” Mr Lupton said, “so future-proofing these heritage buildings is so important, to ensure we maintain the parts that make them special.”
“By resurfacing the pavements and platforms and carrying out any repairs necessary, we can ensure these stations can cope with day to day traffic for the years ahead.
“This includes the temporary removal of the pedestrian bridge at Windsor Station, while it undergoes essential maintenance. Disruptions will be kept to a minimum during these works, and we appreciate commuters’ patience while works continue to improve these stations.”
Mr Lupton said the $3 million dollars worth of upgrades he had secured in the 2008/09 State Budget were great news for all who use Windsor and Prahran Stations.
“The station buildings will be cleaned and painted, and the addition of new bins will make it easier for the station to be kept clean and tidy”, Mr Lupton said.
“Unsightly graffiti will be removed from surfaces to return these much loved and appreciated heritage buildings to their former glory.
“People will also benefit from practical improvements to the stations, such as new canopies, signage, clocks and seats.
“Importantly, safety at the stations will be boosted by improved CCTV cameras and white lighting, part of a wider Government commitment to ensure people who travel on public transport reach their destination safely.”
