Lupton calls for government action on car sharing

State Labor Member for Prahran, Tony Lupton, has called on the Minister for Roads and Ports, Tim Pallas, to improve access to car sharing services throughout Melbourne after Stonnington Council’s refusal to allow car sharing within its boundaries.

“Car sharing provides an alternative means of transport that links into tram, train and bus networks in a cost effective and environmentally sustainable way. It reduces car dependency, resulting in less cars on busy roads and reducing demand for parking spaces,” Mr Lupton said.

Mr Lupton asked Minister Pallas to work with local councils to develop a scheme that provides parking spaces for the use of car sharing vehicles across multiple council areas, in an adjournment speech in Parliament last night.

He said that in the electorate of Prahran, the Port Phillip and Melbourne city councils have shown leadership on this issue.

“Regrettably, Stonnington councillors have voted against providing any car spaces to car sharing services.

“This council is adding to traffic congestion, adding to parking problems and adding to the expense of those constituents of mine who would prefer not to buy a car but use a shared car service,” Mr Lupton said.

“My constituents who live in the city of Melbourne and the city of Port Phillip have access to this service.

“It seems the only way those of my constituents who happen to live in the city of Stonnington will get access to a car sharing service is for the development of a scheme auspiced by the state government across numerous council areas.”

“After the Council’s vote was known I said that I would seek action from the Government to give my constituents in Stonnington access to car sharing services. I will continue to press this matter until my constituents all have equal access to car sharing services” Mr Lupton said.
